Sidewalk Sunday School reaches out to neighborhood

(This Article appeared in the June/July 2008 issue of Interpreter Magazine)

On Saturday afternoons, a ministry team from East Flat Rock (N.C.) United Methodist Church brings Kidz JAM (Jesus & Me) Sidewalk Sunday School to families in an at-risk neighborhood.

Stories, music, prayer, games and practical application of Scripture for daily living are presented from a stage on a specially-designed truck. Team members also provide a meal.

On Fridays, the team goes door-to-door in the neighborhood inviting residents to Sidewalk Sunday School. Each Sunday the church bus picks up residents for church and the team treats them to lunch on the way home.

Members of East Flat Rock Church give school supplies and Christmas gifts to neighborhood children. They also provide food and other assistance to families and drive residents to medical appointments.

"Clearly the most significant part of this ministry is the privilege and honor of bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ through corporate and personal expressions of faith into nearly every home in the selected neighborhood," the Rev. Tim Porter, pastor, said.

The ministry earned East Flat Rock Church the Denman Evangelism Group Award at the 2008 Western North Carolina Annual Conference. This ministry "comes from the heart of an entire congregation committed to offering Christ to their parish," said Jack Ewing, director of the Foundation for Evangelism, who presented the award.
